Medical Lab Technician A-19

NATURE OF WORK: The Medical Lab Technician is responsible for oversight of the medical lab and
staff at the Nisqually Tribal Health Center. This position conducts medical laboratory testing and
analysis services utilizing professional level laboratory techniques.

Oversee Phlebotomy staff and procedures.
Coordinate with clinic staff for reporting and other administrative requirements.
Accurately perform routine and specialized laboratory tests and maintain accurate records of
test processes and results according to department guidelines.
Accurately utilize and maintain current knowledge of medical lab science, materials,
equipment, procedures and techniques.
Maintain accurate and appropriate samples, cultures, and techniques to assure the highest
level of quality control in testing.
Efficiently and skillfully perform phlebotomy techniques to ensure sample integrity.
Perform daily, weekly and/or monthly maintenance of laboratory, equipment and supplies and
adhere to quality control procedures and standards.
Assist with training new employees and/or students in departmental processes, procedures,
theoretical and operational functions and provide effective feedback on a daily, weekly or as
needed basis.
Evaluate, release and report patient results, as soon as reasonably possible, within the
scope of established testing methods.
Consult with physicians and other medical professionals when necessary.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of HIPAA and other laws, rules, and regulations related to the security and
confidentiality of data.
Knowledge of clinical processes and medical terminology.
Knowledge of privacy laws and regulations.
Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices.
Knowledge of protocols and practices in infectious disease control.
Skill in operating laboratory equipment.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
Ability to read and comprehend medical terminology and instructions.

Ability to accurately and proficiently utilize multiple computer systems within department.
Ability to work independently, be self-directed and multitask efficiently to complete
assigned work within established timelines.
Ability to use independent judgment to evaluate, release and report patient results.

High School Diploma or GED.
Graduate of a NAACLS accredited Medical Lab Technician (MLT) program or successful completion
of a comparable military MLT program.
Must hold and maintain a Medical Assistant (MA) Phlebotomist Certification with the
State of Washington.
Two years' recent related work experience in a medical lab and two years' supervisory
Must have experience and/or the ability to work with electronic health record systems.
Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or be able to obtain during the
first six months of employment.
Experience working with or for Native American Tribes or companies is preferred.
