NATURE OF WORK: This position's primary responsibility is to implement comprehensive classroom instruction for enrolled children ages 3-5 years. Classroom activities are designed to promote social physical and intellectual growth in preparation of transition into public school. A special emphasis is to be made in respect to the development and use of curriculum and teaching methodology, which are relevant to the Native Cultural Heritage of the children. In addition, the Teach for the 3-5 year old classroom will lead the Teacher Assistant for that class.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead Teacher Assistant in all responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Develop daily plans and clarifies roles and expectations with staff.
  • Maintain the classroom in a team situations including materials preparation and curriculum planning.
  • Record observations of children, create portfolios of children's work and document developmental progress of children.
  • Develop and document individual child plans, weekly/monthly lesson plans, and maintain program records and submits information and monthly reports in a timely manner.
  • Prepare daily plans that provide opportunities for all children including those with special needs to functions as individuals and group members among peers and adults.
  • Be proactive in initiating contact and building relationships with families.
  • Maintain accurate records for program documentation, e.g., attendance, volunteer hours, meal count, etc.
  • Conduct two family home visits and two parent conferences per year as required by Head Start Performance Standards and/or as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all record keeping and reporting.
  • Responsible for keeping current on all Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Policies & Procedures and Tribal Personnel Policies.
  • Assist in recruiting, classroom/program volunteers to support meeting program monthly goals for non-federal in-kind, as well as training and supervising classroom volunteers.
  • Model and assist children in health and safety routines (teeth brushing, hand-washing, fire/earthquake drill practices).
  • Practice positive behavior management techniques.
  • Participate in all mealtime activities and model family-style dining for children.
  • Participate in all mealtime activities and model family-style dining for children.
  • Attend and actively participate in a variety of meetings, classes and workshops to ensure knowledge of early childhood development and program standards.
  • Work in a friendly and respectful manner with all staff and parents in order to create and foster a team environment.
  • Attend all monthly staff and teaching staff techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education.
  • Three years experience working with children in a preschool, nursery or other early childhood education agency.
  • Experience in providing instruction in a classroom setting.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must pass a State and National (FBI) criminal history background check.
  • Must pass a physical exam and be clear of communicable diseases.
  • Must obtain/maintain a Food Handler's permit, First Aid and CPR cards within 30 days of employment.
  • Willing to work non-traditional work hours/days on occasion.
